This topic seems to appear regularly.
1) Trash /Applications/Sophos Anti-Virus.app if still present.
2) Trash either of the following folders if still present, it depends on which SAV version was previously installed (SAV 4 or SAV 7).
/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus or /Library/Sophos Anti-virus
These are the folders in the root of the hard drive, NOT the ones which also may exist in /Users/<your username>/Library/ which can be ignored for this exercise.
This worked for me when I had a similar problem.
