I just attempted to install Sophos for Mac but this installation
failed:run preflight script for AutoUpdate. Sophos is unusable without it.
What do I do now?

I'd suggest repairing your permissions and attempting a re-install.

It sounds like you might need to run this:
http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/articl
Since this is the free version, the "Sending the archive files to Sophos" solutions won't work very well. However, you can either review the contents of the .tgz file yourselfl, or send me a private message and I'll arrange an email address you can send the file to.

"send me a private message and I'll arrange an email address you can send the file to."
I've sent you a PM.

I seem to be having similar problem as the original poster of this thread. I'm trying to install Sophos for Mac for the first time and I get the installation failed message. When I looked at the install.log in the console I see errors related to preflight.
I downloaded Sophos Diagnostic Utility that you had mentioned and I ran it to obtain a tgz file. If I PM you can you tell me where to send it? Thanks.
