Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

Hello everyone,

Running Leopard 10.5.8, installed SAV a month back and it worked perfectly until a week ago when it stopped being able to update. Tried updating manually but it kept returning an error. Finally tried uninstalling using "Sophos Remove" and it keeps returning a failure with exit code 1. Repaired permissions and tried a fresh install but the installer now reports an install failed "The following install step failed: run postflight script for Sophos Anti-Virus."

It feels like a permissions problem that has walled of one part of SAV but I'm not that technically savvy and cannot really know. I have fixed permissions and tried redoing those steps in Safe Mode but to no avail.

Is there a method for manually removing SAV folder by folder, file by file that does not rely on the installer? Should I sudo anything to fix the permissions on the offending files?

thx

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

I have seen several sets of instructions for removiing Sophos AV software. However I am unable to follow any of them because when I open the Sophos Anti Virus folder there is no thing for me to click that says Remove Sophos Anti-Virus. pkg. I NEED to get this thing off my computer now. Please help me.

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

The reason that there are multiple sets of instructions is that each version of SAV for Mac has a different uninstall method -- SAV 4 Enterprise, SAV 7 Enterprise, and  SAV 7 Home Edition.  Which version do you have installed?  Home edition has the uninstaller right in the Applications folder (next icon after the Sophos Anti-Virus.app  one).  If it's not there, try re-installing the software, and then run the uninstaller.

If you're not using the Home Edition, you can probably contact your local IT or Sophos Customer Support (if you have a support account number) for help uninstalling if you find the instructions in these forums are confusing.

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

I'm trying to remove version 7.2.7 and I have serached everywhere for the Sophos files on my mac and can't find them anywhere. How can I remove this old version and install the new one?

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

Since you're still on 7.2.7, I presume you're talking about our enterprise product?  Both Enterprise and Home Edition version 7 (two separate products) auto-update to the latest version (currently 7.3.3) and do not need uninstallation/reinstallation.  Please read this thread for the details on switching between products (where to find the uninstallers, etc.).

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

Once I remove do I simply reinstall using the standard install? Dumb question, I know, but not sure if the remove actually "removes" 100% of the original files and want to make sure it is 100% clean for a fresh install. Thanks..D

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

As per Apple guidelines, not 100% of the files are uninstalled -- log files for example are left on disk.  However, all files actually installed by the installer get uninstalled.  You may want to verify that your original preferences files are uninstalled during the uninstallation process.  Some uninstall managing software is listed here.  Running something such as Uninstaller and/or iTrash after running the Sophos Uninstaller may help you see whether there are other potentially related files left behind that were created after installation.

Re: Removing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

running sophos 7.2.7, Mac 10.7.2, autoupdate stopped working. went to Sophoes site, saw a new version, thought OK, will update.

uninstalled 7.2.7, downloaded new Home version. went to install, but low and behold, can't (a previous version is running etc.). still have the sophos shield in my tool bar, but no app in apps folder, nothing in library.

how to do a clean uninstall and then install new one?

By running the application in your Applications folder titled "Sophos Remove" to uninstall the software.  If you've already manually removed that, send me a private message and I'll attempt to walk you through cleaning up your currently broken install prior to the re-install.
