Sophos Causing Mountain Lion to Hang (Spinning beach balls and drive inaccessible)

[ Edited ]

Hello folks,

I have the ML GM and I am experiencing hangs and slinning beach balls with on acess scanning on external disks.  I have about 4 external volumns (one USB and the others Firewire 800).  On access scanning is causing access issues to those disks.  It is also spiking the inactive memory.  Disabling on access scanning allows the disks to work normally and the inactive memory to release.  This is with the latest Sophos update and seems to be new with the GM of ML or the latest Sophos update.  I only saw this in the last week or so.

John

PS:  The USB drive is the Time Machine drive if that matters.  And the backup was running when I saw this but I cannot tell if it was the cause or not.

Hi,

I would be curious to hear if turning off "Live Protection" in Sophos helps you or not. I have seen something similar on 10.7, which I have reported in another thread here, and "Live Protection" causes my system to grind to a halt (not hang, but totally unresponsive, spinning beachball, can not even ssh in to the system). I turn "Live Protection" off, all works as normal. Beats me why that is the case.

If you exclude the external disks, does everything play nicely together?

Andrew,

That was already done.  Actually it appears that my external HD (File Vault 2 encryptred) had gotten corrupted.  I reformatted and I have not seen the behavior again.  The Shield still disappears after updates but the hangs seem to have gone away.
