I have a new iMac running the latest version of Lion. Since installing Sophos the system hangs when I try to shut down. The desktop clears, I get the grey shut down screen, and there it stays. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, what is the solution?

This is the first I've heard of this issue. Does it happen every time? Do you have external drives/networks hooked up to your Mac?

Yes, and yes. It happens everytime and I do have several external drives attached (both USB and Firewire).

Try ejecting/disconnecting the external drives first, and see if that fixes the issue; if it does, exclude those drives from on-access scanning and see if that also fixes the issue.

Exclude them from on-access scanning? Doesn't that sorta defeat the purpose of real-time protection?

Yes; the purpose of this is to see if the culprit is the interaction between your external devices and the on-access scan.
Also, data on an external drive is not going to be malicious in a real-time way, unless it autolaunches somehow. Of course, if you regularly execute software off of an external drive, it should definitely be protected with the on-access scanner. For the rest, you can set up a scheduled scan (with archive scanning enabled, etc.) to do a full in-depth scan of all contents.

Okay, I'll try that. I'm a bit slammed at the moment so it may take me a day or two to try it and get back to you.

So far, it seems that ejecting the FW and USB drives is working.
