When attempting to add hidden file paths to Sophos Anti-Virus (or anywhere else), one useful trick is pressing command-shift-. (apple-shift-period) in the Open dialog. This will enable you to see ALL files and folders on your computer, even the hidden ones. Anything with a "do not enter" badge on it can be selected, but the contents cannot be accessed, as you don't have the correct access privileges.
