Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

[ Edited ]

Hi all.

Did a complete uninstall of Version 7 on my 500 mghz PowerBoook (G3 PPC) running Mac OS 10.4.11, did perfectly clean download and install of Version 8 (restarted, corrected permissions, etc.)... within 5-10 mins max of running, it shuts off AutoUpdate and displays an "x" within the Sophos icon at the top of the screen. Sophos log shows nothing unusual, but system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate CRASHED. Restarting the computer results in a complete replication of the problem EVERY time (i.e. at first Sophos icon appears properly - with "S" in it - but shortly thereafter the "S" is replaced with an "x" and the system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate crashed again). Have tried uninstalling, re-downloading and installing Version 8 with same effect re AutoUpdate each and every time. Never had this problem with version 7, so I'm guessing it's specific to Version 8's AutoUpdate program coupled with my machine and Mac OS version. ALL hardware (CPU, RAM, hard drive, etc.) checks out perfect, and as far as I can tell I don't have any software installed on my machine that would be an obviously corrupting or other incompatibility problem.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I've looked through this board's site but don't see anything directly related to this issue; maybe it's a bug specific to PPC's (or G3 PPC's) running 10.4.11???

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

I'll let the developers handle whether it may be an issue with 10.4 or PPC G3 hardware.  It's probably worthwhile to download version 7 again and use that until you get a response.

Agile/Andrew  (or anybody else for that matter) - from where or what link can I re-download the last version 7? I haven't been able to find it *anywhere* on the Sophos website, only the link to version 8. Thanks.

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

Hi Steve,

Any chance you could run the SDU and send in the results? I'd really like to understand why AutoUpdate is crashing, so we can fix it.

In the meantime, v7 is still available here:

SDU has been run and emailed to you. And thanks for the version 7 link.

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

Hi Bob, Can I report the same thing happening to me! I installed Sophos Antivirus 8 on my iMac G3 (400MHz) running OS X 10.4.11, my PowerBook G4 (1.67GHz) running OS X 10.5.8 and my sister's MacBook Pro (dual 2GHz) running OS X 10.6.8. Sophos AntiVirus 8 runs fine on my PowerBook and my sister's MacBook Pro, installed over Sophos 7 fine and ran Sophos AutoUpdate after installing, the OnAccess Scanning works fine as well and the AutoUpdate continues to function. However, on my iMac G3 the AutoUpdate fails. I checked the system log in Console and notice AutoUpdate crash logs and what stands out is a reference to an "incompatible cpu-subtype" which suggests to me (if it is a hardware issue) that the version of AutoUpdate bundled with Sophos 8 cannot run on G3 hardware. I have saved the crash log and system logs if you would like me to send across to you but they are not very detailed from what I can see. Cheers.

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

By the way, I did try removing and then reinstalling Sophos 8, and repaired privileges before resinstalling Sophos 8, but this has not solved me problem. It seems, until Sophos comes up with a solution (or deprecates G3 hardware, which will lead to this anyway) I will be downgrading back to version 7 which functioned without incident on my G3 iMac.

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

I had this happen one week after installing.  Using MacOSX 10.6.8.  Ended up uninstalling.  I would love to think this will be fixed and will certainly download again if it is (although how to find out I don't know).  In the meantime, it was just too annoying.

Re: Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

Hi Steve,

I have some log files, my system keeps on crashing as well.

Problem seems to be the InterCheck process.

I am using Sophos Home Version 8.0.4C on my home OS X 10.7.4 iMac.
A lot of times I see the Sophos Icon in the top left as greyed out.
It says the on-acces scanning is disabled, and manual it can't be started.
A few reboots later, it starts working again... until it stops again.
Auto update fails most of the times.
