… doesn't work on a brand-new install of OS X on a just-formatted drive with no third-party software …
I took the issue reported across three topics, quoted to a separate topic:
Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition stops responding, total system lock-up and other misbehaviour when scanning a USB drive, or a folder, greater than 600 MB, on updated Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.3 with iWork, iLife and multiple partitions

Might it just be that Sophos for Mac Free works better on Tiger rather than on 10.6. My total drive is about 13 gigs. The scan took about 90 minutes. However, certain, I assume, large folders often took about 5 minutes to scan while the rest went along rather quickly. As not much of a techie, a fairly new Mac user, I just like things that work!!, simple as that, I have no patience with buggy software. The black icon just makes me feel secure. When using ClamXav, I never knew about the Sentry function. I just ran it every few days, update the definitions, ran the occasional drive scan, put up with the occasional "nag screen" for a donation, that was it. The fact that "on-access scanning" is the default setting for Sophos gets the user on the right course from the start. I actually took a serious look at the 30 page manual, gave me a greater appreciation for the software.
