May we have some more details?
Do you have a dialog that comes up whenever you attempt to access the file?
Does this dialog have a threat name?
Are you able to manually delete the file?
Is this a file you use, or a file that is unexpected?

the file is in my shared user folder. its file name is "infected". This is the 1st threat I ever seen on my Mac. I was thinking it might be a windows
threat, and my Mac sophos can't clean it up because it wont affect me, not sure? I was thinking of just dragging infected file to the trash? Will this be acceptable? Thanks for info!

If you can drag it to the trash, this is likely all you need to do. However, without telling us what the detection name is, there's no way for us to know.
