grey shield

I have installed Sophos today on an Intel iMac using OSX 10.6.8. The preference panel indicates that 'on-access' is switched on, and the green button is illuminated. But the shield in my menu bar is grey, not black, indicating that 'on-access' is switched off. Which of these is correct?

Try downloading eicar from wikipedia and see if it gets detected.  If it does, on-access is enabled.
